Hey mama (or papa), If your teen has become fluent in eye rolls, headphone shrugs, and one-word answers — you’re not alone. Summer is actually the perfect time to soften the static and get back to real connection. Here are 3 Sassy-approved ways to reconnect with your teen before school chaos kicks back in:
1. Ditch the Devices for One Hour a Day
I know, I know — easier said than done. But just one sacred hour a day with no screens (yes, even yours) opens the door for eye contact, real talk, and presence. Go for a walk. Bake something together. Lie on the porch and look at clouds. The point isn’t the activity — it’s the availability.
2. Enter Their World Without Fixing It
Ask what music they’re into. Watch a show they love (without critiquing it). Let them teach you something — even if it’s how to make a weird smoothie or beat a level in some obscure game. When they feel respected in their world, they’re more likely to show up in yours.
3. Make Space for Heart Talk, Not Just Small Talk
It doesn’t have to be heavy. Try this: “What’s been the best part of your week?” or “When do you feel most like yourself?” Ask without expectation. Listen without lecture. Your presence — not your advice — is what heals.
This summer isn’t about being the perfect parent. It’s about being a safe one.
Keep it sassy, Dr. Sassy
