March Challenge: Unplug, Look Up, and Reconnect!

Updated: Jun 3

Hey there, families! Dr. Sassy here, and I’ve got a challenge for you this month—one that could completely transform the way you connect, play, and experience life together.

If you’ve ever caught yourself (or your kids) doom-scrolling, zoning out, or feeling oddly drained after too much screen time, you’re not alone. The truth is, our brains aren’t built for endless digital stimulation. They’re wired for movement, creativity, and real connection. And when we overuse or misuse screens, our nervous systems pay the price.

So, this March, I want to help you and your family take back control of your tech, reclaim your time, and reconnect with what truly matters. Here’s how:

1. Download the Opal App: Your Family’s Screen-Time Coach

Let’s be real—self-control is hard when our phones are designed to keep us hooked. That’s why I love Opal, an app that helps you schedule screen-free time, block distractions, and track your phone habits so you can be more intentional with your time.

Try this: Set up “Connection Breaks” throughout the day where your whole family puts their phones down and fully engages with each other—whether it’s a meal, a game, or just a few minutes of eye contact and conversation. Trust me, even short breaks can reset your nervous system and help you feel more present.

2. Go Grayscale: Make Your Phone Boring, So Life Feels More Exciting

Did you know your phone’s bright, colorful apps are designed to hijack your attention? But here’s a trick—switch your phone to grayscale (black and white mode) and watch how much less appealing it becomes!

Your real life—the trees, the sky, your kid’s silly smile—is in full, vibrant color. The more you look up, the more alive the world feels.

Try this: Challenge your family to a "Color Hunt" outside. What shades of blue do you see in the sky? How many different greens are in the grass? It’s a simple way to retrain your brain to focus on the beauty around you instead of a screen.

3. Create a “Connection Zone” at Home

Ever notice how every room in your house has a place for charging devices, but not for connecting with each other? Let’s change that!

Try this: Designate a “Connection Zone” in your home—a screen-free space where conversation, play, and creativity rule. Maybe it’s a cozy corner with books, a family game table, or just a spot on the couch where phones don’t get to interrupt.

When we pause technology, we make space for what matters—face-to-face laughter, deep talks, and the little moments that make life rich.

Are You In?

This March, let’s be more intentional with our screens and our time. Download Opal, go grayscale, and create connection breaks. Your brain, your family, and your heart will thank you.

And remember—the best moments in life don’t happen on a screen. They happen when you look up, step outside, and truly connect.

Are you up for the challenge? Let me know how your family is unplugging this month—I’d love to cheer you on!

With sass & connection,

Dr. Sassy
